Writing

Group Writing Classes

We teach how to write persuasive essays, creative writing, personal narratives, literary response, and poetry, cycling through the forms of writing throughout the year to keep class fresh and interesting.

Class starts with a review of homework.  We have a computer screen that all students can see.  We edit and give feedback on the screen so students learn from their own work and the work of others.  We work primarily on grammar, spelling, punctuation, organization, vocabulary, and critical thinking. Kids learn from the feedback they receive individually as well as the feedback all other students receive.  This repetition improves learning.

Then we give a lesson.  This usually involves review, next steps, or a new form of writing depending on the week.

Finally, we assign homework.  Homework usually has three parts.  First, students edit old work based on feedback from class.  Then students star new writing or add on to their old assignment. Finally, students read an assigned news article.  Then they summarize and give their opinions on the article.

When students return the next week, we continue the editing and teaching process.  Step by step, kids grow and learn their English skills.

Individual Writing Classes

For quicker growth, customized one-on-one classes are available.  We can also embed reading instruction into private classes.

Our Teachers

Our English teachers are trained in the Simon Academics methods. Currently, all our teachers have earned teaching credentials. Sometimes we hire teachers who have not earned credentials but show great ability in English writing and English tutoring.
