Class Descriptions

All writing classes use the editing process to teach grammar, spelling, punctuation, organization, vocabulary, and critical thinking.

Writing 3-4 – Aimed at grades 3 and 4, this class covers persuasive, literary response, creative, and personal narrative writing. This class is open to strong 2nd graders who love reading chapter books. 5th graders who need extra help or who have not taken a class with us should consider starting here.

Writing 5-6 – Aimed at grades 5 and 6, this class covers persuasive, literary response, creative, and personal narrative writing. This class is open to strong 4th graders who love to read. 7th graders who need extra help or who have not taken a class with us should consider starting here.

Writing 7-9 – Aimed at grades 7 to 9, this class focuses on persuasive and literary response writing, while also covering creative, and personal narrative writing. 9th graders who need extra help or who have not taken a class with us should STRONGLY consider starting here.

AP Language Writing – Aimed at grades 9 to 12, this class covers the three types of AP Language and Composition essays. This is a challenging class, so only strong 9th grade writers should join. AP Language is generally considered easier than AP Literature.

AP Literature Writing– Aimed at grades 9 to 12, this class covers the three types of AP Literature and Composition essays.

Our intention is for high school students to take at least one year of each AP writing class.

All reading classes use group reading and discussions to teach comprehension, phonics, pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and analysis.

Reading 3-4 – Aimed at students who already read chapter books like Magic Tree House.

Reading 5-6 – Aimed at students who already read chapter books like the works of Beverly Cleary, we read and discuss novels to improve in comprehension, phonics, pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and analysis.

Reading 7-9 – Aimed at students who already read chapter books like The Hunger Games, we read and discuss novels to improve in comprehension, phonics, pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and analysis.

Reading 9-12 – Aimed at students who need to read classics for honors and AP high school courses, we read and discuss novels to improve in comprehension, vocabulary, and analysis.

SAT/ACT – Aimed at students who will take the SAT and/or ACT, this class covers all sections of both exams but focuses on language arts skills.

Private – Work one on one to improve in language arts, math, science, SAT, and ACT. We provide help with schoolwork or use our own curriculum. Private courses are customized to individual needs.

If your child stops attending classes, their spot is still reserved and their classes are still deducted until you notify us of your cancellation or a pause in classes. No credit, refund, or extension will be given for missed classes.

If you are in a private class, you must give at least 24 hours of notice before cancelling and rescheduling a class. If your child does not show up, you will lose the class.

Pick Up and Drop Off: Students must be dropped off no more than five minutes before class time, and parents must wait with their children until students are allowed into the classroom. Parents must be present for pickup at the end of class. For safety, an adult must walk children into the office for pick up and drop off. Simon Academics is not responsible for children outside of class time and on our premises. Vehicles may not stop in front of the office for drop-offs and pick-ups and may not honk for pickup. Parents must let all drivers (family, friends, or hired) know this rule. You agree that Simon Academics, LLC, its owner, and staff are not liable for the safety of children outside of our classes. Children will stay in the waiting area before and after class. Late pickups incur a $5 per minute charge. If you do leave during your child’s class, please arrive five minutes before the class finishes.

Privacy: Simon Academics may freely use student work as well as photos, videos, and recordings of students for blogging, social media, advertising, training, and educational purposes, without compensation or additional notice to the student or guardians.

Student Behavior: Students are expected to listen to and obey teachers within reason, complete all assigned work, and exert appropriate levels of effort. Students who are rude, disruptive, or dangerous may be asked to leave class temporarily or permanently, and there will be NO REFUNDS for behavior-related expulsions and suspensions. There is no eating on Simon Academics property except when the food is provided by Simon Academics. Do not bring any drinks but water, and water must be consumed before or after class, not during.

If your child has a known behavior problem that you discuss with us beforehand, we will modify the behavior policy accordingly. Children with behavioral difficulties usually perform best in private classes.

All our policies are subject to change. All class times and dates are subject to change. Usually that just means we modify holidays to reasonably match the Fremont Unified School District calendar.
