How We Help Your Struggling Reader

The process starts with one of our credentialed, professional teachers identifying the strengths and weaknesses with your child’s reading. We go beyond seeing problems with phonics and comprehension, finding out why the difficulties are there. Sometimes a child just needs some practice. Sometimes they have different learning styles.

Once we know what the difficulties are, finding the gaps in reading, we then design a custom curriculum for that specific child. Depending on age and personality, we have countless activities to choose from, integrating art, exercise, and creativity into a program that keeps each a child’s attention so that they can learn. Your child make dislike reading at home, but they will love coming to us, as we turn learning to read into games and just plain fun.

The foundation of learning to read is phonemic awareness, which is awareness of, recognition of, and the ability to manipulate sounds. A child who cannot tell /sh/ from /ch/ will not be able to read or spell correctly.

Them comes learning letter names and their sounds. This knowledge is, of course, fundamental to reading.

After that, we get to phonics, also known as sounding out. From CVC words to diphthongs and suffixes, we guide our students through assembling words.

At the same time, we teach sight words. Adult readers have memorized many thousands of words, and children need to do the same.

With those basics down, we can work on fluency, the smoothness and, to a certain extent, speed with which children read.

All along, we always work on reading comprehension. Reading is only meaningful with understanding. We have a library of thousands of books to choose from, ensuring we can meet the interests of every young reader.
